The 12 Houses in Astrology
The twelve houses divide the natal chart into areas of experience. They begin at the Ascendant and move counterclockwise through themes such as identity, resources, communication, home, creativity, work, partnership, transformation, belief, vocation, community, and inner life.
Houses answer “where?”
A planet describes what is active and a sign describes how it acts. The house shows where that combination is likely to become visible. Mars in the tenth house, for example, brings drive and competition into vocation, reputation, or public responsibility.
An empty house is not absent from life. Its cusp sign and ruling planet still describe how that area is approached.
Angular, succedent, and cadent houses
The angular houses—first, fourth, seventh, and tenth—anchor the chart and tend to be highly visible. Succedent houses consolidate resources and continuity. Cadent houses adapt, exchange, learn, and prepare movement toward the next angle.
This grouping adds rhythm to the chart without ranking one house as universally better than another.
Reading a house accurately
Start with the sign on the cusp, locate its ruling planet, then consider planets inside the house and aspects to those planets or the cusp. House systems can place boundaries differently, so consistency matters when comparing charts.
Repeated emphasis—several planets, a luminary, or the chart ruler in one area—usually deserves more attention than an isolated factor.

What does an empty house mean?
It does not mean nothing happens there. Read the sign on its cusp and the condition of that sign’s ruling planet.
