What Is a Natal Chart?
A natal chart is a symbolic map of the sky for the date, time, and place of birth. It does not predict a fixed future. It organizes astronomical positions into a visual language that astrologers use to discuss temperament, recurring themes, relationships, and periods of development.
The four layers of the chart
Planets describe the function or drive being expressed. Zodiac signs describe how that energy tends to operate. Houses place it within a life area, while aspects show the geometric relationship between planets.
A useful reading connects all four layers instead of interpreting one placement in isolation. Venus in a sign becomes more specific when its house and its aspects to Saturn, Mars, or the Moon are also considered.
Why birth time and place matter
The date establishes the broad planetary positions. Birth time and location determine the horizon, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, and the boundaries of the twelve houses. Even a modest time difference can move house cusps and, near a sign boundary, may change the rising sign.
Use the time recorded on a birth certificate whenever possible. If the time is unknown, planetary sign positions can still be explored, but house and Ascendant interpretations should be treated cautiously.
A practical reading order
Begin with the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant. Then review the chart ruler, the distribution of elements and modalities, occupied houses, and the strongest aspects. Repeating themes matter more than a single dramatic placement.

Does a natal chart change?
